A Love Letter to the Unconventional

In meinem Projekt „A Love Letter to the Unconventional“ stelle ich Menschen und ihre Leidenschaften in den Mittelpunkt. Manche verlieren sich in wissenschaftlichen Welten, andere in ihren Sammlungen. Wieder andere widmen sich mit Hingabe der Popkultur oder Interessen, die nur wenige teilen. Doch was sie alle verbindet, ist ihre unerschütterliche Begeisterung – oft jenseits gesellschaftlicher Erwartungen und nicht selten als „anders“ wahrgenommen.

Ich möchte sichtbar machen, wie vielfältig Leidenschaft sein kann. Jede Geschichte ist einzigartig, und doch eint sie alle derselbe Kern: Stolz, Freude und eine tiefe Verbundenheit mit dem, was man liebt.

Auf meiner Suche nach Menschen mit solcher Hingabe habe ich gemerkt, wie selten sie in unserer Gesellschaft sind. Deshalb habe ich auch zum Selbstauslöser gegriffen – um zu zeigen, dass ich nicht nur Beobachterin, sondern ein Teil dieser Welt bin.
Die Begegnungen mit den anderen Teilnehmenden haben mir ein Gefühl von Vertrautheit und Verständnis entgegengebracht, wie ich es bisher nur selten erlebt habe. Besonders dann, wenn ich erzählte, dass ich seit 2011 die Träume von, mir teils völlig fremden Menschen sammle und sie in ihren Schlafplätzen porträtiere – und eigentlich nichts anderes in meinem Leben machen möchte.

„A Love Letter to the Unconventional“ ist für mich eine Einladung, Empathie und Verständnis zu entwickeln und Menschen dazu anzuregen, sich mit ihrer eigenen Leidenschaft auseinanderzusetzen. Zudem setzt es ein Zeichen für die Sichtbarkeit einer oft missverstandenen und unterschätzten Gruppe.

Am Ende habe ich alle Teilnehmenden eingeladen, ihre Porträts passend zu ihrer Leidenschaft zu gestalten. Die Idee für diese Form von Dialog kam mir beim Durchstöbern meiner Buffy-Fanbücher. Wo hätte ich auch sonst nach Inspiration suchen sollen, als bei der Serie, die ich seit mehr als 20 Jahren, mindestens einmal pro Jahr komplett durchschaue?

Rechts und links habe ich jeweils einige Besonderheiten, die ich bei den Teilnehmenden entdeckt habe platziert.

In my project “A Love Letter to the Unconventional”, I focus on people and their passions. Some lose themselves in scientific worlds, others in their collections. Still others devote themselves to pop culture or to interests that few share. But what they all have in common is their unwavering enthusiasm—often beyond social expectations and not infrequently perceived as “different.”

I want to show how diverse passion can be. Each story is unique, yet they all share the same core: pride, joy, and a deep connection to what one loves.

In my search for people with such dedication, I realized how rare they are in our society. That’s why I also reached for the self-timer—to show that I am not just an observer, but part of this world.

The encounters with the other participants gave me a sense of familiarity and understanding that I have rarely experienced before. Especially when I told them that since 2011, I have been collecting the dreams of people, some of whom are complete strangers to me, and portraying them in their sleeping places—and that I don’t really want to do anything else in my life.

For me, “A Love Letter to the Unconventional” is an invitation to foster empathy and understanding, and to encourage people to explore their own passions. It also seeks to raise awareness of a group that is often misunderstood and underestimated.

At the end, I invited all participants to design their portraits to match their passion. The idea for this form of dialogue came to me while browsing through my Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan books. Where else could I have looked for inspiration than in the series that I have been watching in its entirety at least once a year for more than 20 years?
